Toxic Polluting
These facilities use ethylene oxide (EtO)—a known human carcinogen—to sterilize medical equipment and consumer products. In the process, toxic emissions are released into the surrounding air.
Both facilities were named by the EPA as among the top EtO polluters in the country.
The Medline facility has been operating since 1994, exposing nearby communities to harmful pollutants for decades. The Vantage plant opened in 2010. As a result, tens of thousands of people in Waukegan and Gurnee face an increased risk of cancer and other serious health conditions.
